The whole Higashigaoka middle school is upset about the attempted suicide of a boy student, Noguchi, who was tormented by bullying he experienced during the previous semester. On the first day of new semester, a substitute teacher, Murauchi, comes to the school. Students are surprised because he is a stutterer. Murauchi cannot speak smoothly, but his words are sincere and get to students’ hearts. What he directs the students to do first is to put Noguchi’s desk and chair back in its rightful place. The school’s principle, the parents, and the students themselves all wish the matter to be swept under the carpet, but the man adamantly encourages them to find their own path to accepting responsibility.
