Description: In the year 1716 a mysterious epidemic stickens men in the country of Japan, dropping the population of men to 1/4th of its prior state. With the drastic reduction of men, the gender roles have become reversed in Japan. Woman become the dominant members of society and males are sought out for the ability to produce children. - A young man named Unoshin Mizuno (Kazunari Ninomiya) hopes to marry childhood sweetheart Onobu (Maki Horikita), but due to class differences realizes this is almost impossible. To raise his social status and also save his poor family, Unoshin Mizuno enters the Ohoku (inner chambers of the Shogun?s castle) and attempts to vie among 3,000 other men for the affection of the female shogun. What Unoshin Mizuno quickly learns about the Ohoku is that the men there are all beautiful, but highly ambitious and conniving. In this environment, the 7th shogun Tokugawa passes away and the new shogun Yoshimune Tokugawa (Kou Shibasaki) takes the thrown and enters the Ohoku?

Looking for something different to watch that consists of historical period, love, deception, animosity, beautiful boys and women power??? Ha ha! this one is for you.
The costume paraded in this movie - wow! breath taking! the garments - ermmm… though look a bit funny to my eyes especially the ones worn by the pretty boys, but the one for the ladies, so beautiful :)
The life style as told in this movie, if this really happened, ohhhh so terribly sad. So so sad to think even at that period in 1700s, the parents due to poverty can sacrifice their sons to "sell" themselves for money? male prostitution in other words… no explicit skin show here - so dont get excited, but the morale of that way of life is clearly depicted in the scripts. Well written and performed.
The feeling of "love" between Yunoshin & O-Nobu, I must admit = pretty shallow. Kind of not much chemistry there? more feelings between Mizuno & the Shogun herself. As for Chiaki @ Matsushima… arghhh…. his role is just so annoying here but that simply showed how great actor he is :) lol !!!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie.
Happy watching!!!
