From what I know about Korean culture is that their reasoning is different than ours who grew up in the Western culture. Reporting your future father-in-law to the police is as wrong as reporting your own father (in that culture). Hae-Joo believes that she should endure anything because of love. Also, most Asian young adults are very prideful (especially about their own family financial situation). And marrying someone without that person's family's blessings is almost wrong. I think that they believe that making your boyfriend/girlfriend going against the father/mother that raised them f

From a western perspective it seems irrational, but from an Eastern perspective family is extremely important, marrying without your parents' blessings is almost unthinkable. I do believe this is a great standard, and parents should be forsaken as a last resort. Also, you just don't disrespect the elderly in Asia. These are hierarchal societies. The youth stays in its place (I think western society needs a dose of this, there's less deliquency in East Asia because kids don't grow up as little "bosses", especially in Korea). Also education is very important. So from that perspective she endures because she thinks the reason she's rejected is because of her position. She wants to EARN his respect, as a daughter in law.
